Swinburne Orientation Day, Take 4

The fourth O Day for 2006.

Its getting tiring.

Even though its in the middle of our holidays, our end of term holidays, no less, when all students are having fun, resting, going out, we council members need to take the time to drive to school, discuss the project, plan it all out, write letters, submit the proposals, rewrite the letters after you discover that there's a change to the programme that you have not been informed about, run around trying to get things photocopied, get the funds released, purchase prizes, prepare games, arrange tables to prepare for registration, go to University to welcome and help with the registration of new students, stay back to rearrange the tables for the orientation, welcome the students to orientation, run the orientation, run the games, run around trying to locate the invited guests, make sure everything runs on time, trying to get the students to not be so shy, see them off, rearrange the tables for the lectures on monday, and prepare a report of the whole event.

Sigh. And thats the short list.

I wonder why I put myself through all that trouble. And we do it several times a year.

I guess its great when the students come off it happy, and submit survey forms with nice sounding comments, which by the way, need to be read and filed too. Then you come across one where the student says its boring and they didn't get much out of it. Its so much worse when the student is one who only came for the morning part, where its all talks by the University, then skips the afternoon part run by us because they're afraid it will be the same as in the morning. Only the afternoon part has always been considered the best part of the day. So they come back right at the end and submit a bad report.

How sad.

Still. At least the majority of the students are very happy. Which is good. Our effort has been appreciated. One of the best feelings in the world. You somehow feel so good about all the work you've put into something, when someone comes up to you after and tell you how much they have enjoyed it.

On another high note, Associate Professor Wang Su Chen gave one of the best welcoming speeches I have ever heard. And as a Toastmaster, I have heard my share of good speeches. She had such great things to say, I actually want her to come back and give the speech again in the next orientation. The same speech. I don't care. And she had the audience captivated too. They were responding to her, something none of the other people who have spoken before done.

These things just make me want to come back and do it all over again in 2 weeks. Which, I will. Swinburne Orientation Day, Take 5. Coming soon to a University near me.
